Project at a glance
- Project type
- University team course design, 2025 · Individual subsystem
- Marshall's role
- Individual storage and BOG calculations, report and drawings
The design requirement
The team’s green ammonia concept used renewable hydrogen feed and required a two-week production buffer on site. My subsystem work followed the connection from stored inventory to tank geometry, heat entering the liquid, and the gas that would need to be handled.
My contribution
I prepared the storage and boil-off gas design report, supporting spreadsheet calculations, P&ID, tank drawings and equipment specification. I also helped organise the team’s schedule at the start of the project.
From storage to boil-off gas
Excel calculations using project stream data exported from Aspen. Methods included mass and volume relationships, hydrostatic and hoop-stress approximations, thermal-resistance and energy balances, simplified compressor and condenser calculations, and velocity-based line sizing.
- Used project product-stream data to establish the inventory and volume basis, then calculated preliminary tank dimensions and shell courses.
- Estimated heat inputs through the sidewall, roof and base, included incoming-liquid sensible heat, and translated the total into an estimated BOG flow.
- Worked through preliminary compression, condensation and cooling-water calculations, and documented proposed piping, fittings and control connections.
Design deliverables and reflection
The output was a preliminary subsystem design package for the team project. The work gave me practice in carrying assumptions across calculations and engineering documents. My project reflection identified an improvement for future work: confirm shared assumptions and interfaces earlier, with time reserved for cross-group review.
Project work and supporting records
Subsystem design package
My individual Design B report and supporting workbook document storage, thermal and BOG calculations. The submission also includes a P&ID, tank drawings and an equipment specification.
Reflection on interfaces
My Design B reflection records early scheduling work and the need to check shared assumptions and subsystem interfaces earlier.
Scope and limitations
This was preliminary coursework design. The calculations and drawings describe a proposed subsystem; they are not construction documents, measured operating results or a demonstration of verified standards compliance.
